Proper Abutment selection for single tooth implant retained restorations has been for many years directly related with the long team success of the implant prosthetic complex. Optimizing the long term abutment screw to implant joint stability against material’s fatigue failure as well as satisfactory esthetics has been a major challenge in the last decades. In recent years, the literature has shown concerns regarding possible negative effects of improper restorative management of the hard and soft tissue zones between the head of an implant and the prosthetic connection. Typically the selection of cementing or screw retaining a single tooth restorations had been made following implant’s position as well as functional and esthetic considerations ignoring biological issues. The purpose of this presentation is to offer new restorative design alternatives for single tooth implant retained restorations aimed at the preventing sub gingival cement related complications and therefore provide adequate biological, functional and esthetic long term results.

  • Enumerate the different strategies described in the literature that are used to pre-vent sub gingival cement deposition in cement retained implant supported restora-tions.
  • Mention the reported incidence of perio-implant mucositis or pre-implantitis related to cemented restorations.
  • Describe newer abutment/screw designs that allow for screw retention even if the implants are not exiting within the occlusal table.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of screw and cement retention in single unit implant dentistry.
  • Mention different alternatives and protocols when cementing different abutments to definitive restorations.
